2's get over the line against ON's for second win of the season

HHCC – 2nd XI – Match Report vs ON’s 4th XI – Match 2 – 02/05/26

The 2’s continued their 2026 Campaign with an away game against ON’s 4th XI in round 2 of the season.

Having won the toss we decided to have a bowl first.

We welcomed back the returning Harvey Banks, Steve Finch and Elliot Holmes into the ranks.

Looking to continue the momentum we created in the field last week we opened the bowling with veteran’s Kevin Taylor and Steve Finch. Both bowled very well and tight and created lots of chances and were backed up extremely well in the field, the highlight being an outstanding low catch by Krish Sainath at mid on.

Kev performing for the second week on the trot and returning the fine figures of 10-3-23-3 taking his season tally to 7 wickets after just 2 games. Finchy bowling really tight as always and created lots of problems for the batters and on another day could have had more wickets, finishing with very economical figures of 6-4-5-1.

We introduced Elliot Holmes into the attack in the 14th Over and he bowled with a lot of pace and created difficulties for the batters. Elliot picked up a wicket with an excellent well disguised slower ball which deceived the batter and bowled him, Elliot finished with figures of 5-0-18-1.

Elliot Cantrell was introduced into the attack in the 21st over and bowled well for the second week on the trot and created problems for all the batters he bowled at, finishing with figures of 6-1-10-1.

Oscar Herbert came into the attack to replace Elliot Holmes in the 24th over and extracted a significant amount of spin out of the surface and combined big spinning leg spinners with googlies to cause problems for the batters. Oscar picked up 3 wickets in his 5 overs and could have had more finishing with figures of 5-0-19-3.

We managed to bowl ON’s out for 75 in the 31st over. We produced another very good fielding and bowling performance which we will look to take into week 3.

Fred Jeyes and Krish Sainath opened the batting for us. Unfortunately, we lost Fred and Harvey Banks early on.

Abhinav Kulur joined Krish when we were 4-2 and under pressure. Krish and AB played extremely sensibly and very maturely combining some excellent shot selection with some well judged running between the wickets. They waited for the loose balls and took advantage of those with some eye catching stroke play and boundaries. They absorbed the pressure we were under and played the situation so well and maturely to put on an excellent 48 run partnership considering the situation of the game.

We lost Krish for 16 and AB for 31 in close succession and continued to lose regular wickets to find ourselves at 60-7 still needing 16 runs with only 3 wickets remaining.

Oscar Herbert joined Amos Awaghade at the crease and the pair of them remained calm and absorbed the pressure. Amos and Oscar batted really sensibly together in the high pressure situation we found ourselves in, and both combined good shot selection, defence and putting the loose ball away to score the remaining 16 runs required to get us over the line for a win.

We move onto a game at home tomorrow against Great Houghton 2nd XI looking to keep the momentum we have created so far.
